If you’ve ever had a blood pressure reading come back high, the advice is almost always the same: cut the salt. It’s become one of the most repeated recommendations in health, and for most people it barely moves the needle. That’s because blood pressure isn’t a salt problem. It’s a mineral balance problem — and salt is only one player in a much larger cast.

Your body runs on minerals. They control the electrical charge across every cell membrane, the tension in your blood vessel walls, the volume of fluid in your bloodstream, and the signals your kidneys use to decide whether to hold onto water or let it go. When those minerals fall out of ratio with one another, pressure rises. Understanding which minerals, and how they work together, changes the entire conversation.

The sodium-potassium partnership

Sodium and potassium are the two minerals most directly tied to blood pressure, and they don’t act alone — they act as a pair. Nearly every cell in your body runs a tiny pump that pushes sodium out and pulls potassium in, maintaining a delicate electrical gradient. This gradient is what allows your nerves to fire, your muscles to contract, and your blood vessels to relax and constrict on cue.

Here’s what the “cut the salt” message misses: the problem usually isn’t too much sodium in isolation. It’s too much sodium relative to potassium. Most modern diets flip the ratio our bodies evolved to expect. Ancestral eating patterns delivered far more potassium than sodium, largely from plants, roots, and fresh foods. Today the ratio is often reversed, with processed foods delivering a flood of sodium and very little potassium to balance it.

When potassium is low, blood vessels stay tighter, the kidneys retain more sodium and water, and pressure climbs. Restoring potassium often does more for blood pressure than restricting sodium ever could. This is why fruits, vegetables, and mineral-rich whole foods tend to lower blood pressure — they’re quietly rebalancing the sodium-to-potassium ratio.

Magnesium: the relaxation mineral

If sodium and potassium set the electrical stage, magnesium is what allows the muscle to let go. Every blood vessel is wrapped in smooth muscle, and magnesium is required for that muscle to relax. Without enough of it, vessels stay in a state of low-grade constriction — narrower pipes, higher pressure.

Magnesium also acts as nature’s calcium channel regulator. Calcium tells muscles to contract; magnesium tells them to release. When magnesium runs low, calcium’s contracting signal goes unopposed, and vascular tension rises. It’s no coincidence that a whole class of blood pressure medications works by blocking calcium channels — magnesium does a gentler version of the same job when it’s present in adequate amounts.

Magnesium is also one of the most commonly depleted minerals, drained by stress, poor soil quality, refined diets, and even the medications people take for blood pressure itself. It’s a mineral worth paying attention to precisely because so few people have enough of it.

Calcium’s double-edged role

Calcium is where the picture gets more nuanced. It’s essential — nerves and muscles can’t function without it — but its location matters enormously. Calcium belongs in your bones and teeth. When it starts accumulating in soft tissue and arterial walls instead, it contributes to stiffness and rising pressure.

This is why a blood pressure conversation can never be about a single mineral. Calcium and magnesium work in opposition, sodium and potassium work in opposition, and the ratios between all four tell you far more than any one value on its own. A person can be eating plenty of calcium and still have it working against them if magnesium is too low to keep it in its proper place.

Why terrain matters more than any single number

This is the heart of a terrain-based approach to health, and it’s where hair tissue mineral analysis (HTMA) becomes a useful tool. A blood pressure cuff gives you a single output — one number, one moment. It tells you that pressure is high, but nothing about why.

Minerals, and the ratios between them, offer a window into the underlying terrain: the cellular environment that produced that number in the first place. Are potassium levels collapsed? Is the sodium-to-potassium ratio inverted? Is magnesium being burned through faster than it’s replaced? Is calcium accumulating where it shouldn’t? These patterns tell a story that a single reading can’t.

The terrain lens shifts the question from “how do I force this number down?” to “what imbalance is producing this number, and how do I correct the conditions underneath it?” That’s a slower, more foundational path — but it addresses cause rather than symptom.

Practical ways to support mineral balance

You don’t need a lab panel to start moving in the right direction. Several everyday shifts support healthier mineral ratios:

Prioritize potassium-rich whole foods. Leafy greens, avocados, potatoes with the skin on, bananas, beans, and squash all deliver potassium in the food matrix your body handles best. This is often the single most impactful change.

Don’t fear quality salt — fear processed sodium. The issue was never salt itself; it was the enormous sodium load in packaged and fast foods, arriving with almost no minerals alongside it. A modest amount of unrefined salt in a whole-foods diet is a very different thing than the sodium in ultra-processed products.

Feed your magnesium. Dark leafy greens, pumpkin seeds, almonds, and avocado are solid dietary sources. Because magnesium is so easily depleted by stress and modern life, it’s one many people struggle to keep up with through food alone.

Mind the calcium-magnesium relationship. Rather than loading up on calcium in isolation, aim for balance. Magnesium is what keeps calcium doing its job in the right places.

Address stress and hydration. Chronic stress burns through magnesium and potassium and pushes the body toward sodium retention. Adequate hydration with mineral-containing water supports the whole system.

The bigger takeaway

Blood pressure is a conversation your body is trying to have with you — about fluid, about vascular tension, about the mineral environment inside your cells. Reducing that conversation to “eat less salt” misses almost everything that matters. Sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium move together in ratios, and it’s the balance between them — the terrain — that determines whether your vessels stay relaxed and your pressure stays steady.
